“Hey, I wasn’t expecting to hear from you tonight,” Euphoria grinned into the phone.
Last time they’d talked, Nathaniel had been clear about working all evening. She was supposed to go out with Charlotte for their weekly dinner and drinks, but Charlotte canceled at the last minute. With her plans blown, Euphoria stayed in and added some special touches to the Alpha Athletics logo. She was minutes away from completing it.
“Well, I wasn’t actually expecting you to answer either. I thought I might leave a message and you would get back to me after your dinner.”
“Lucky for you, my plans were cancelled.”
Nathaniel’s laughter was a deep well of renewing water. Euphoria shivered as it washed over her.
“Yeah, lucky for me,” he said into the phone, “Since your plans were cancelled, have you eaten?”
Euphoria looked over to the black container of her half-eaten microwave meal. It had just been something to stave off the hunger, but nothing more. Whatever Nathaniel was offering was worth it.
“Get dressed. I’m gonna come pick you up.”
A tingle skittered down Euphoria’s spine. It always did when Nathaniel insisted they spend time together. He was a man of options and always made her feel like it was her choice if they went out. Today, he’d wanted to see her and he hadn’t asked if she was free.
“Okay, I’ll need about thirty,” Euphoria said with a smile.
She tried to keep the giddiness from her voice, but wasn’t sure she’d accomplished the feat. There was just something about Nathaniel that made her want to spend every minute she could with him. She didn’t know how long his interest would last, but she didn’t want to squander one second of it.
As soon as their call ended, Euphoria darted from her small apartment office to her bedroom. She had no idea where they were going so she had to make sure her outfit was both sexy and classy, just in case. Dresses flew from their hangers as she pulled out several options to try. One thing after another was discarded as she searched for the perfect look. Her heart was in her throat.
She and Nathaniel had been going out relatively steadily. They weren’t rushing things, and every “date” ended platonically, but that didn’t stop her heart from drumming like a HBCU drum-line every time they spoke. Euphoria finally settled on a floral print midi dress with a bold pattern and strappy cutouts over her back and chest. She slipped into the shower to freshen up, and was out in record speed pulling on the dress and slipping into her heels.
Nathaniel would be there any minute. He hadn’t been back to her place since dropping her off after her fall, but she’d given him the address again. He shouldn’t have any problem finding her. She splashed on her favorite perfume in all her sacred places and quickly applied light makeup. The boldest color was a nice and deep pink that matched the flowers in the print of her dress.
She was transferring her purse contents into a small clutch when she heard the doorbell buzz. He’d made it and found the separate apartment entrance to boot. Euphoria took a deep breath. She couldn’t wait to see him.
Leaving the upstairs of her bedroom, Euphoria made her way to the main apartment floor. Her heels clicked with each excited step. Euphoria wondered if it were too soon to tell Nathaniel what she felt whenever he would come to her. Whether he was coming to her place or she was meeting him somewhere, Euphoria got the same drip of honey from her body. Her heart was a racing greyhound in her chest, and her veins strummed with electricity. There had been no one from her past to compare it too. Euphoria wasn’t sure she’d even wanted there to be anyone close.
Euphoria let out a slow breath just before opening her apartment door. She could already smell the spice in the expensive cologne that Nathaniel preferred. Her nipples perked up beneath her dress and her lips pulled into a smile even before laying eyes on him. He could take her to a beat up pizza joint. Hell, he could take her to a greasy spoon, just being out with him was enough to lift her moods. As she opened the door her pulse quickened. He was worth the rushed shower, and the chaos of choosing something to wear. Nathaniel was worth so much more.
Their eyes met as soon as the door swung free. Euphoria’s smile was met with Nathaniel’s.
“You look ravishing,” he said as Euphoria stepped back to allow him in.
Euphoria pushed her fingers through the loose curls of her hair. Her smile was pure joy as Nathaniel pulled her into his arms.
His body was hard as stone as he enveloped her in his arms. Euphoria wrapped her arms around his waist. She stifled a moan as he leaned and nuzzled his face into the curve of her neck. She heard him groan. Euphoria felt the tensing of his muscles as he tightened his grip around her waist.
They’d only ever hugged. Part of Euphoria was afraid that if he ever kissed her things would escalate before she could pull back. The way he held her in his arms generally turned her to butter, made her melt from the heat of him. Today was a little different. He held on to her like there was something she had that he needed.
Euphoria brought her hands from wrapped around him. She took Nathaniel’s face into her palms and searched his eyes. Dark, clear pupils stared back, but Euphoria sensed he was hiding something. It wasn’t unusual for her to feel like Nathaniel had a secret, but something was off about him tonight.
“Are you okay?” she asked tenderly.
What was heat turned to worry as Nathaniel took a deep breath. His lips were pulled in a tight line now, but his hands were still palm down on her back. He massaged the small of her back gently.
“I just have a lot on my mind, but I don’t think I want to get into it tonight.”
Euphoria’s face was blank as she stared at him. So often, Nathaniel pulled back from letting her into his deepest thoughts. She wondered what it could be tonight. Euphoria knew there was nothing she could say or do to get him to tell her what was weighing on him heavily. The only thing she could hope was that they truly enjoyed dinner tonight.
“Well, whenever you are ready to share. I’m right here,” Euphoria said.
Her heart melted when she saw the softening in Nathaniel’s eyes. She caressed his cheek as she pulled her hands away.
“I’m going to get my purse and I will be right down,” Euphoria said as she turned toward the stairs to her bedroom.
The excitement that had been brewing within her was starting to wean. Euphoria didn’t expect Nathaniel to pour out his darkest secrets every time they met. She didn’t expect he would be the type to share his most private thoughts until he was ready. Euphoria wasn’t sure he would ever want to include her in the depths of his life.
The seed being planted that she wasn’t his norm was only fed by the idea he would stay guarded. Against her hearts true desires, Euphoria started to reinforce the walls around her heart. As she collected her purse she vowed to only let Nathaniel as close to her heart as he would let her to his. Her resolve was sure. One of them had to protect her heart.
